Fueled by unprecedented high temperatures and low humidity, the fires have prompted evacuations in affected areas. Governor Tim Walz has deployed the National Guard for fire suppression. As the situation remains dire, an air quality alert is in effect. However, cooler temperatures and rain are expected soon, which could help mitigate the fires' further spread.
Relentless wildfires have continued to rapidly grow across northeastern Minnesota, destroying at least 144 homes and buildings, fueled by unseasonably high temperatures and low humidity.
The Jenkins Creek fire has now engulfed more than 20,500 acres and remains uncontained, with local officials unable to confirm the exact number of destroyed buildings.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz activated the state's National Guard to assist with fire suppression efforts as evacuations remain in effect.
Leslie Device, a resident affected by the fires, stated, "This devastation has turned our lives upside down. We are hoping for rain to bring relief."
