Sky ECC distributor released from French custody pending trial | Computer Weekly
Briefly

Thomas Herdman, a Canadian businessman, was released by a Paris court after five years in pre-trial detention connected to allegations of distributing Sky ECC cryptophones. French, Belgian, and Dutch authorities had previously infiltrated Sky ECC servers, leading to significant arrests based on intercepted messages. During a recent bail hearing, Herdman noted a shift in the court's tone, influenced by newly present Canadian Embassy representatives. He reported visible injuries from prison and emphasized the need for new evidence to prove his innocence as he prepares for a trial set for November 2026.
As soon as I walked into the room, my lawyer told me something was up. The Canadian Embassy was in attendance for the first time in the entire four years I was detained.
We will get new evidence that the French instruction judge refused to get. We have to prove our innocence - there's no presumption of innocence here.
The judge talked about me totally differently. He suddenly said I was a great dad and a former competitive skier and athlete ... it felt surreal.
Herdman appeared in court with visible facial injuries, which were attributed to a recent incident at Fleury-Mérogis prison.
