'Technical issues' caused Toronto 911 calls to be rerouted: TPS | CBC News
Toronto police reported that technical issues intermittently rerouted some 911 calls to partnering emergency services. The problem occurred between 11:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. and affected just over 200 calls. Toronto police said they were still able to answer incoming 9-1-1 calls, but some calls were delivered to other emergency services through established redundancies. Peel police confirmed receiving some calls originally intended for Toronto police. Calls answered by other emergency services were diverted back to Toronto police. The cause of the issue was unclear. Toronto police also referenced efforts to improve 911 response times by replacing aging analog technology with a new digital network.
"Toronto police say some calls to 911 in Toronto were intermittently rerouted to other police services Tuesday due to “technical issues.” The issue happened between 11:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. with just over 200 calls affected, spokesperson Ashley Visser told CBC News in an email. “While we were still able to answer incoming 9-1-1 calls, the issue caused some 9-1-1 calls to be delivered to partnering emergency services as per established redundancies,” she said."
"Peel police confirmed that the service received some calls originally intended for Toronto police. Visser said calls answered by other emergency services were diverted back to Toronto police, and it’s unclear what caused the issue. The rerouting occurred during a defined window from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., affecting just over 200 calls, while Toronto police continued to answer incoming 9-1-1 calls."
"“While we were still able to answer incoming 9-1-1 calls, the issue caused some 9-1-1 calls to be delivered to partnering emergency services as per established redundancies,” she said. “While we were still able to answer incoming 9-1-1 calls” indicates call handling capacity remained, but delivery routing changed temporarily through redundancy arrangements with partner services."
