"Her death has shown us first-hand how broken our judicial system has become,"
"Despite clear evidence of the danger he posed, the courts failed to protect our daughter."
"If he hadn't been released on bail again, Darian would be alive today,"
"The courts put faith in a surety to justify bail, even though the same surety had failed multiple times before with no consequences. That failure cost our daughter her life."
Paul Henderson and Flo Bellman say bail reform would improve community safety after their 25-year-old daughter, Darian Hailey Henderson-Bellman, was fatally shot in Brampton on July 28, 2020. The suspected killer, her boyfriend, had prior arrests for alleged gender-based violence and illegal firearms and was out on bail at the time of the shooting. The parents urge courts to prioritize community safety and victims' rights and call on the federal government to act. Peel Regional Police hosted a victims and survivors symposium where regional police chiefs recommended strengthening bail rules, improving victim supports, and advancing legislative changes. Liberal MP Kody Blois says the federal government plans stricter bail and sentencing for violent repeat offenders.
