"Voters in east Scarborough will head to the polls Monday to pick a new city councillor to fill the seat vacated by former councillor and deputy mayor Jennifer McKelvie after she won a seat in Parliament this year. Twenty candidates are vying to win the Scarborough-Rouge Park council seat and represent a massive suburban ward that stretches from Steeles Avenue E. to Lake Ontario. Voting will take place at 37 locations in the district from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, says a city news release."
"Eligible voters will need to visit their assigned voting location as found on the city's MyVote website. The city reminds voters to bring identification with their name and qualifying district address, in order to receive a ballot. People with acceptable identification and not on the voters' list will still be eligible to vote on election day. Advance votes were held last week with 4,376 people turning out to cast their decision for the Ward 25 councillor position, the city said."
"First elected to represent the ward in 2022, McKelvie took over mayoral duties for a brief term following former mayor John Tory's resignation in 2023. She resigned from her council seat effective May 9. She won the federal riding of Ajax for the Liberals with 56.3 per cent of the vote, beating Conservative candidate Greg Brady, who picked up 39.1 per cent."
A by-election in Scarborough-Rouge Park will be held Monday to fill the council seat vacated by Jennifer McKelvie after her federal win. Voting will occur at 37 locations from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; voters must use their assigned polling place listed on the city's MyVote website. Voters need identification showing name and qualifying address to receive a ballot; acceptable ID holders not on the voters' list can still vote. Advance voting saw 4,376 participants. Some candidates report vandalized campaign signs causing significant loss.
