Following backlash against U.S. President Trump, Alberta's Premier Danielle Smith proposed a referendum for the province's separation if enough public support is demonstrated. Although not personally advocating for separation, Smith stated her government would honor a citizen-led petition that meets necessary criteria. This move reflects growing frustrations in Alberta with federal governance. Known for its substantial oil and gas reserves, Alberta is a vital economic contributor to Canada, yet remains politically conservative and critical of national policies perceived as detrimental to its interests.
"Albertans have always been loyal, proud, and generous Canadians... we love Canada," Smith stated, illustrating the province's ongoing commitment despite political discontent.
"If there is a successful citizen-led referendum petition that is able to gather the requisite number of signatures... our government will respect the democratic process," Smith emphasized on the potential for a separatist vote.
Smith criticized successive Canadian governments for what she termed 'destructive legislation and policies,' implying a divide between Alberta and federal governance.
Alberta, recognized for its significant oil and gas reserves, has been instrumental in Canada's economy, accounting for 84% of crude oil and 61% of natural gas production.
