A clinical trial has revealed that an immunotherapy drug could significantly improve survival rates for patients with advanced head and neck cancer. The trial is the first major breakthrough in treatment for these difficult-to-treat cancers in two decades, as shown by the experience of Laura Marston, who was given immunotherapy before and after surgery. The treatment primes the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells, an approach researchers believe will enhance outcomes for hundreds of thousands of patients battling this disease.
Laura Marston, 45, was given dire chances of survival due to advanced tongue cancer. The immunotherapy she received amazed her, allowing her to live longer without a recurrence.
Prof Kevin Harrington explains that the trial gives the immune system a chance to recognize the tumor and strengthens the immune response post-surgery with continuous drug administration.
