Kara Tointon, a former EastEnders actress, publicly shared her experience of undergoing a double mastectomy after discovering she carries the BRCA gene, which significantly elevates cancer risk. She revealed her decision in an Instagram video to raise awareness of genetic testing, prompted by her family history of ovarian cancer. Following the loss of her mother to cancer, Tointon chose preventative surgeries after deciding her family was complete. She is now working with the Eve Appeal charity to support gynaecological cancer initiatives.
There is a history of both cancers in my family on my mother's side, but for various reasons, including generational trauma of which I'll talk more about another time, we hadn't looked into it until that point.
Last year, having had my second son in 2021 and deciding that our family was complete, I underwent two preventative surgeries.
