Afraid to take vacation? The problem isn't your boss it's how you work
"As a business owner with hundreds of business clients, and an employer myself, I know many people successful people working at companies who have no problem using their allotted vacation time each year. These people take ownership of their jobs, and make sure they get them done. My company offers unlimited paid time off (PTO) to our employees. I don't"
"Good employers also understand that PTO is compensation. Discouraging an employee from taking vacation is like telling them to take a cut in pay. You've made the commitment in writing. You better not renege. This is not only good practice, but discouraging PTO is potential wage theft. If you're working for someone who practices this kind of wage theft, my advice would be to find somewhere else to work."
A survey of more than 3,000 US workers found that almost a quarter did not take a vacation day during the past year and as many as 82% avoid using accrued time off. Employees cite job security concerns and fears of replaceability driven by AI and automation as reasons to forgo leave. Some employers adopt unlimited PTO and focus on outcomes rather than tracking days off, trusting employees to fulfill responsibilities. Discouraging use of PTO can be equivalent to cutting compensation and may constitute potential wage theft; affected workers are advised to seek other employers.
