Russia's Arctic units have been wrecked in Ukraine, but NATO is bracing for a 'dangerous' comeback
"Russian forces pulled from the Arctic to fight in Ukraine have suffered heavy losses on the battlefield, but NATO expects them to eventually rebuild, emerging as a "dangerous" challenge, a top Norwegian military official told Business Insider. Vice Adm. Rune Andersen, chief of the Norwegian Joint Headquarters, said there is no "clear and immediate military threat" from Russia in the north right now. But, he warned, Moscow has plans to rebuild and expand their military once the fight in Ukraine ends."
"Arctic security has become an important issue for the NATO alliance in recent years, as Western officials have grown increasingly concerned about Russia's expanded military footprint in the strategic region. NATO leadership has called for greater investment in Arctic defense to counter Russian - and, more recently, Chinese - activity. Allied countries are increasingly taking steps to strengthen their posture in the High North, including through new deterrence operations."
Russia redeployed much of its Arctic military to Ukraine, where those forces sustained heavy battlefield losses. NATO currently assesses no clear and immediate military threat in the Arctic, but expects Moscow to rebuild and expand its northern forces after the Ukraine campaign. Allied militaries are using the lull to increase Arctic defense investments, strengthen High North posture, and conduct deterrence operations. NATO members are training and preparing for a more dangerous Russia while monitoring increased Russian and Chinese activity in the region. Most units pulled from the Kola Peninsula have been committed to Ukraine, weakening immediate Arctic capabilities.
