Ford has initiated a stop-sale recall for more than 300,000 Mustang Mach-E vehicles globally due to a defect causing the vehicle to lock itself, potentially trapping individuals inside. This recall affects nearly 197,000 units in the U.S. from the 2021-2025 model years. The absence of physical door handles makes the locking issue particularly concerning if the auxiliary 12-volt battery dies. Ford plans to implement an over-the-air software fix, but the issue has prompted widespread concern among owners, some of whom have experienced lock-out situations, including instances with infants trapped inside their vehicles.
In its announcement, Ford states that this defect hasn't resulted in any accidents or injuries. However, owner forums feature numerous stories of people being locked out or in.
The problem stems from the fact that the Mach-E doesn't have physical door handles. If the 12-volt battery that runs most auxiliary systems in the car dies, this can cause the doors to lock.
