"On lap 20 to 35 I was struggling a bit to feel my hands and my feet, he said. We were one lap behind, we were last, and there was probably no point to keep going."
"Adrian Newey, admitted their Honda engine had such a severe vibration problem which was transferred into the chassis that he feared his drivers were in danger of suffering permanent nerve damage."
"Unless they can find some magic in the next 10 days, pray. Pray for me, he said."
Honda's return to Formula One with Aston Martin has been marked by significant technical failures. At the Chinese Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso retired after 32 laps due to severe engine vibration causing loss of sensation in his hands and feet, while teammate Lance Stroll retired after 10 laps with battery problems. The hybrid engine's battery system has been problematic since the beginning. Adrian Newey, the team principal and car designer, previously expressed concerns about potential permanent nerve damage to drivers from the vibration. Pre-season testing was severely limited because drivers could not safely complete laps. The engine suffers from both underpowered performance and reliability issues, with the team facing an uphill battle heading into the Japanese Grand Prix.
