Rivian begins production on the R2 electric SUV

"We are really excited to be producing R2 for our customers,” said CEO RJ Scaringe during the rollout event, which aimed to reassure customers and investors following a tornado that damaged the factory."

"The first units rolling out now are going to Rivian employees, and customers won't be able to configure their vehicle orders until June, according to CFO Claire McDonough."

"The R2 SUV is smaller and lighter than the flagship R1, with all versions rated for at least 300 miles per charge and capable of charging from 10 percent to 80 percent in under 30 minutes."

Rivian has commenced production of its R2 SUV, with CEO RJ Scaringe driving the first unit off the production line. The initial deliveries will be for the Launch Package, priced at $57,990, while the base model starting at $45,000 will not be available until late 2027. Customers will not be able to configure their orders until June. The R2 is designed to compete with Tesla's Model Y, offering a range of at least 300 miles per charge and fast charging capabilities.
