"A new study has found that several Western automakers are significantly ahead of Chinese brands when it comes to reducing emissions from electric vehicle manufacturing, building cleaner supply chains and sourcing battery materials responsibly. American and European automakers have made strides in these areas over the past few years, indicating that clean and equitable EV supply chains are indeed attainable."
"Battery production remains deeply entangled with fossil fuels and mining of critical minerals like cobalt is linked to labor violations in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Lead The Charge evaluated 18 of the world's top car manufacturers over 80 indicators, scoring them on carbon created during production of steel, aluminum, and batteries as well as workers' rights and mining practices."
"There's broad consensus among the scientific community that EVs pollute far less than combustion engine vehicles over their lifetime. They're critical to decarbonizing transportation and blunting the worst effects of global warming, all of which have consequences on public health and well-being."
A comprehensive study by environmental group Lead The Charge evaluated 18 major automakers across 80 indicators measuring EV supply chain sustainability. Western automakers, particularly Tesla, Ford, and Volvo, demonstrated significantly greater progress than Chinese brands in reducing manufacturing emissions and sourcing battery materials responsibly. The evaluation assessed carbon emissions from steel, aluminum, and battery production alongside human rights considerations including workers' rights and indigenous protection. While EVs produce substantially fewer lifetime emissions than combustion vehicles, production remains fossil fuel-dependent. Battery manufacturing and critical mineral mining, especially cobalt extraction in the Democratic Republic of Congo, continue generating environmental and labor concerns. Despite evidence that clean, equitable EV supply chains are achievable, substantial gaps remain between corporate commitments and actual implementation.
