"And so I just jumped in. My only thing was, 'You got to get this baby out of here.' If she's going down, I'll go down with her, but the goal is to get us both up."
"I was, like, 'I guess I'm jumping in... I wasn't going to let that baby die. That's crazy.' He held on to the stroller, in which the 8-month-old girl was strapped, while treading water for several minutes."
"When you almost lose your kid like that, you don't need the world judging you too, especially when it wasn't anything on purpose. There was no neglect or anything."
Lio Cundiff jumped into Chicago's frigid Lake Michigan after witnessing a baby's stroller blown into the water by strong winds. The mother was too panicked to act, so Cundiff immediately entered the water and held onto the stroller containing the 8-month-old girl while treading water for several minutes. Though the baby went under a few times, Cundiff kept her above water until both were rescued via ladder and transported to hospitals. Both the baby and Cundiff are in good condition. Cundiff defended the mother against criticism, emphasizing the accident was unintentional and that she didn't need additional judgment during such a traumatic experience.
