430-pound bear hit by truck in Sonoma County, officials said
Briefly

A 430-pound bear was killed by a truck in Sonoma County, highlighting rising instances of wildlife collisions on roads. The bear, initially alive after the impact, lay on the shoulder before being collected by wildlife officials later that morning. Officials note that rising bear populations and range expansion into populated areas increase these risks. Between 2016-2020, 111 black bears were killed on California roads, with wildlife advocates urging drivers to remain vigilant, especially during dawn and dusk when wildlife is most active.
"The bear was reportedly alive and walking around after the crash, but then laid on the shoulder [of the road]," said David Derutte, sympathizing with the bear's struggle.
"Black bears in California are expanding their range, including into areas north of San Francisco Bay such as Healdsburg," stated Peter Tira, urging drivers to remain vigilant.
