Javier Assad pitched for the Iowa Cubs, but the team lost 3-0 to the Indianapolis Indians after a scoreless game until the fifth inning. An RBI single ended Assad’s day, and a two-run homer later in the inning extended the lead to 3-0. Iowa threatened in the sixth with multiple baserunners but failed to score, and managed little offense in the seventh through ninth. In Double-A, the Knoxville Smokies lost 3-2 to the Chattanooga Lookouts, with Connor Schultz striking out eight over five innings without issuing a walk. Jefferson Rojas provided early offense with an RBI single and later scored after stealing third and benefiting from a throwing error.
"After pulling off a 1-0 win over the Indianapolis Indians (Pirates) on Wednesday, it was the Cubs who suffered a shutout loss on Thursday. Javier Assad was on the mound for Iowa and, while his outing wasn't the longest, he was solid. Assad went 4.1 innings and struck out five, but he did allow for hits, a run, and a walk."
"The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth. The Indians broke the tie with an RBI single off Assad that ended the starter's day. Later in the inning, a two-run homer off Luis Peralta extended the lead to 3-0. The fifth inning was all the scoring Indy would need."
"The Knoxville Smokies fell 3-2 to the Chattanooga Lookouts (Reds) on Thursday, but they did have a few bright spots. Connor Schultz got the start, and he had some really good stuff. Schultz went five innings and struck out eight Lookouts. He allowed five hits and two runs, and didn't walk a batter."
"Offensively, Jefferson Rojas got the Smokies on the board early. In the first, he came up big with an RBI single on an 0-2 count, giving Knoxville a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, he stole third base and ended up taking home on a throwing error."
