Reds DFA Candelario halfway through $45M deal
Briefly

The Cincinnati Reds reinstated Jeimer Candelario from the injured list but promptly designated him for assignment, marking a significant shift in strategy only a year after signing him to a hefty contract. President of baseball operations Nick Krall highlighted the team's focus on competitive chances, stating it was a 'sunk cost' decision as Candelario was not contributing effectively. With a disappointing 2024 season, including a low batting average and considerable strikeouts, the Reds opted to move forward without him, showcasing the challenges of player performance amidst injuries.
"We felt this gives us our best chance to win games to keep the guys we had here versus activating him," Nick Krall, the Reds' president of baseball operations, said.
Candelario, 31, had started 12 games at third base, seven at first base and three at designated hitter before landing on the 10-day injured list in late April with a lower back injury.
Krall called it a "sunk cost because you can't bring a player that's not going to help his team win."
He has a career batting average of .237 with 110 home runs and 384 RBIs in 880 games.
