Noah Schultz started for the White Sox against left-hander Robbie Ray, a 34-year-old veteran in his 12th big-league season. Ray entered with a 3-6 record and had allowed strong production to batters leading off innings, including a .404 average, .466 on-base percentage, and .846 slugging percentage. Chase Maid led off with a home run on a 3-2 pitch. Willie Adamus reached on a wild 3-1 pitch, then Luis Arraez executed a bunt that moved Adamus to second. Casey Schmidt drove in Adamus with a ground single to right, tying the game, before Rafi Devers hit a long double to right-center to give the Giants the lead.
"Chase Maid goes yard to start off this rubber match against the Giants. How about that for a little pop on this Sunday? I mentioned how Robbie Ray has been giving up a lot of damage to first batters of the inning, and this is no different."
