Are Nespresso Pods Biodegradable? Not In The US - Tasting Table
Briefly

Nespresso, a pioneer in coffee capsules, faces sustainability challenges due to its non-biodegradable coffee pods which contribute to significant landfill waste. Despite a recent study suggesting coffee pods may reduce overuse of coffee and water, critics highlight the environmental impact of the pods themselves. Nespresso announced plans for a line of compostable coffee capsules in 2022, but these are currently only available in select European countries. As of now, no biodegradable options are accessible in the U.S., leaving environmentally conscious consumers concerned about the sustainability of their coffee choices.
It's been estimated that as many as 9 million pounds of coffee pods end up in landfills annually, contributing significantly to plastic waste and environmental concerns.
While Nespresso launched a pilot line of compostable coffee capsules in Europe, these options are still not available in the U.S., raising sustainability concerns.
