Morally repugnant': Brazilian workers sue coffee supplier to Starbucks over slavery-like conditions'
Briefly

John, a Brazilian teen, was recruited for hazardous work on a coffee farm without remuneration or safety gear. After enduring extreme working conditions, he was rescued by authorities on June 2024. He and others have since filed a lawsuit in the U.S. against Starbucks, alleging child labor and slavery-like conditions. Supported by the International Rights Advocates and Coffee Watch, they seek financial compensation and have filed a complaint with U.S. Customs to prevent imports of coffee produced under forced labor. The issue highlights systemic problems in coffee supply chains.
The complaint cites examples of various operations by Brazilian authorities that rescued workers in recent years and states that the cases are only the tip of the iceberg.
If we're able to convince CBP that our case is watertight that would be a gamechanger because thousands of people have been found in those conditions by Brazilian authorities.
