Dennis Burton, an immunologist at the Scripps Research Institute, has dedicated nearly 15 years to developing an HIV vaccine, which is considered a leading project in biomedical research and funded by a substantial NIH grant. Recently, Burton received the news that this program would be terminated due to budget cuts imposed by the Trump administration. Despite promising advancements towards an effective vaccine, researchers face immense challenges due to the rapidly evolving nature of HIV, making the creation of a broadly neutralizing antibody crucial but unachievable without continued funding.
On May 30, he learned that work will end. In a video call, NIH officials told him that the Trump administration was terminating the program next year.
Designing an effective HIV vaccine has proven immensely challenging for researchers, who've spent decades working to figure out how to prompt the immune system to protect against this wily virus.
Just when it looked like we could beat this virus, we're going to give up.
Complex and duplicative health programs have resulted in serious duplication of efforts that dilute taxpayer resources.
