A suspected Ebola case in São Paulo involved a man from the Democratic Republic of Congo who developed fever after recently visiting Africa; he tested positive for meningitis and was intubated with a serious condition. A separate suspected case in Rio de Janeiro involved a patient who recently traveled to Uganda; he tested positive for malaria. In both cases, other diagnoses do not rule out Ebola, and investigations are ongoing. In eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, five patients recovered from a rare Ebola type, with four planned discharges and one discharged earlier, as a new treatment center opened in Bunia, Ituri. WHO reported 134 confirmed cases across Congo and neighboring Uganda with 18 confirmed deaths as of May 29, and noted faster virus spread than response despite improved facilities and new aid arrivals.
"“Four people will be discharged today and there was one that was discharged the day before yesterday,” WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said during the opening of a new Ebola treatment centre in Bunia, the provincial capital of Ituri."
