DRC World Cup squad ordered to isolate before entry to US due to Ebola outbreak
Congo’s World Cup squad must isolate for 21 days in a bubble in Belgium because of a deadly Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. US officials told FIFA, the Congolese national team, and the Kinshasa government that the squad must maintain the bubble’s integrity or risk being denied travel to the United States. After the 21-day period, the team is scheduled to travel to Houston on June 11. US officials emphasized safety and security for American people, participating teams, and fans. The squad is exempt from a temporary US travel ban affecting non-Americans who have been in the DRC, Uganda, or South Sudan within the prior 21 days. The WHO reported 82 confirmed Ebola cases and seven confirmed deaths, with many additional suspected cases and deaths. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, with no approved vaccines or treatments.
