Report: More Than 150,000 US COVID Deaths Were Unreported In 2020 and 2021
""Our antiquated death investigation system is one key reason why we fell short of accurate counts, particularly outside of big metropolitan areas," said Andrew Stokes of Boston University, the senior author on the paper."
"Steven Woolf, a Virginia Commonwealth University researcher, noted that barriers remain for the same people now as they did six years ago, stating, "People on the margins continue to die at disproportionate rates because they lack access to healthcare and testing.""
A study revealed that around 16% of COVID-19 deaths in the US during the first two years of the pandemic were not included in official counts, amounting to about 155,000 unrecognized deaths. This figure adds to the 840,000 deaths officially reported. The uncounted deaths predominantly affected Hispanic and other communities of color, particularly in states like Alabama and South Carolina. Factors such as inadequate death investigation systems and political influences on testing contributed to the underreporting of deaths.
