WHO chief visits Ebola epicenter in eastern DR Congo
The outbreak epicenter is Ituri province in eastern DR Congo, with additional cases detected in North Kivu and South Kivu and in neighboring Uganda. DR Congo has recorded at least 1,077 suspected Ebola cases and at least 246 deaths since the outbreak was declared on May 15. The outbreak is centered in a war-torn northeast border area near South Sudan and Uganda, which closed its border this week. At least nine cases are confirmed in Uganda, with one death reported in Kampala. The Bundibugyo variant driving the outbreak has no approved treatment or vaccine, and symptoms can take up to 21 days to appear.
