Uncle Sam has unsealed criminal charges against Rustam Rafailevich Gallyamov, a Russian national accused of leading the cybercrime organization behind Qakbot, a malware responsible for infecting hundreds of thousands of computers worldwide. The charges against him include conspiracy to commit computer fraud and wire fraud. Gallyamov allegedly developed and controlled Qakbot since 2008 and provided access to various ransomware groups for extorting victims. Despite charges, he remains in Russia, limiting the chances of his arrest in the U.S.
The feds believe the suspected criminal mastermind is in Russia, so he's not in US custody, nor has he been arrested.
Using this unauthorized access, Gallyamov and his coconspirators provided access to ransomware crews who deployed various strains to extort victims.
