Verizon Expands Satellite SMS Beyond Emergencies With Skylo Partnership
Briefly

Verizon customers can now enjoy two-way SMS messaging over satellites, made possible by a partnership between Skylo Technologies and Syniverse. Utilizing the Syniverse Evolved Mobility solution, this service allows mobile network operators to seamlessly integrate SMS functions over satellite networks similar to terrestrial systems. This integration aims to overcome existing interoperability challenges. With SMS functionality already available on certain Verizon devices, the effort enhances global connectivity, especially in rural regions, using licensed Mobile Satellite Service spectrum without spectrum-sharing requirements.
"Evolved Mobility for Messaging helps mobile network operators overcome interoperability challenges when integrating with non-terrestrial networks like Skylo," explained Andrew Davies, chief executive officer of Syniverse.
"Our collaboration with Syniverse makes it easy for mobile network operators to extend the same technology used for terrestrial SMS to satellite communications." said Jerome Baccelli, vice president of engineering and operations at Skylo.
