"We may think of the San Francisco Victorian as pure Americanathe city's postcard-perfect Painted Ladies stand as the embodiment of the spirit of Californian optimism. (For a certain generation, that colorful row meant a new Full House was about to begin. Also purely American.) But we sometimes forget that these buildings have decidedly English DNA. That worked in designer Hana Mattingly's favor when asked to make over a Lower Pacific Heights town house for a family of British transplants."
"Innen Studio transformed this San Francisco Victorian town house into a home that balances Californian enthusiasm with British sensibilities. This is a great example of how we maintained the original integrity of the house, explains designer Hanna Mattingly. The ceiling medallion is original, and the room layout stayed exactly the same. She made the space feel more contemporary through the furnishings, which include a linear pendant by Allied Maker, a curved Maiden Home sofa, and Nickey Kehoe's Modern swivel chairs."
A Lower Pacific Heights San Francisco Victorian town house was remodeled for a family who relocated from London. Designer Hana Mattingly honored British roots while preserving original architectural integrity, including an original ceiling medallion and unchanged room layout. The renovation followed a three-tier plan: highlight historical trims and plaster moldings; introduce Britannia-inspired elements such as Shaker cabinetry, richly muddied paint colors, and furnishings sourced from the U.K.; and add contemporary touches. Modern lighting and furniture—like a linear Allied Maker pendant, a curved Maiden Home sofa, and Nickey Kehoe swivel chairs—created a balance of old-school refinement and Californian modernism.
