Is this the world's most eye-popping restaurant? The architectural marvel in a Leipzig industrial estate
"The Sphere is like a vision from the future, dropped among used-car dealerships and construction equipment rental outlets, in a working-class neighbourhood that few tourists would ever pass through by design. We had this very good cook in the canteen and he needed a space to deliver more refined dishes The Sphere has only been open since June 2020, when its arrival was barely noticed due to Covid, but the journey from idea to inauguration took two decades."
"Throughout the construction process, photographer Margret Hoppe documented its various elaborate stages. The Spirit of Past Future, an exhibition of her shots, has just opened in the building, also featuring work by Armenian artist Nvard Yerkanian. This exhibition tells the story of modernist architecture, including artful photographs of Bauhaus structures, which Niemeyer found too rules-based, and buildings by Le Corbusier, who employed the young, not-yet-famous Brazilian architect as a draftsman at the beginning of his career. The Niemeyer Sphere crowns that career."
A 12-metre white Niemeyer Sphere sits among old brick buildings in an industrial neighbourhood of Leipzig, presenting a futuristic presence in a working-class area. The Sphere is the final design of Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and was realized after a two-decade process, opening in June 2020 with little public attention because of Covid. Photographer Margret Hoppe documented the construction stages and her exhibition The Spirit of Past Future displays those images alongside work by Armenian artist Nvard Yerkanian. The exhibition links the Sphere to modernist architecture, including Bauhaus structures and Le Corbusier, who once employed Niemeyer as a draftsman. The project originated after a West German entrepreneur bought an East German factory in 1994 and converted it into Techne Sphere.
