Can you still buy things in Denmark if payment service Nets is down?
Nets reported an outage beginning around 9am Thursday, with card payments across the country being declined. The provider stated that transactions were not going through normally and assessed that the majority of payments were being rejected. The outage affected businesses and individuals in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, and also some people abroad. If paying by card is needed, outcomes depend on the card type and the payment terminal. Dankort cardholders should be able to pay at a Nets terminal if the terminal is operating in offline mode and the shop accepts Dankort. Offline mode requires a physical card, a powered terminal, and shop awareness, and not all card machines automatically switch to offline mode.
"The issue started around 9am, and since then Nets' transactions have not gone through as they do normally. Our assessment is that the majority of payments are being rejected."
"An outage starting around 9am, which at the time this article was written still had not been fixed, means that card payments across the country are not working. As of 1pm on Thursday there is still no information as to when the outage will be over."
"If you have a Dankort payment card then you should always be able to pay at a Nets terminal, even if the Nets system is offline. To do so, you'll need your card (the actual, physical card rather than a digital version through Apple Pay or similar), the place you're shopping at will need to have a power supply, and it will need to accept Dankort."
"But of course, the terminal will need to be in offline mode, the shop will need to be aware of this and the customer will need to be aware of this. When a card machine is in offline mode, it can still accept payments from most payment cards, and always from the Dankort payment cards if the shop in question accepts them. Not all card machines automatically switch to offline mode"
