Google and Valve will kill "Steam for Chromebooks" experiment in January 2026
Briefly

Google and Valve will terminate support for Steam on ChromeOS starting January 1, 2026. Users can still install Steam, but it will display a notice about the end of support. Games from the Beta program will be inaccessible post-deadline. The service was initially launched in early 2022 as an alpha version for select high-spec devices and progressed to a beta with broader support. Google's efforts aimed to enhance gaming capabilities on Chromebooks, releasing optimized hardware and support for cloud gaming services.
The Steam for Chromebook Beta program will conclude on January 1st, 2026. After this date, games installed as part of the Beta will no longer be available to play on your device.
Steam originally launched on Chromebooks in early 2022 as an alpha that ran on just a handful of newer and higher-specced devices with Intel chips inside.
