Relocating from San Diego to the Czech countryside led to a stark contrast in work culture. In the U.S., long hours and constant connectivity were standard, with little separation between work and personal life. The culture required extra effort for promotions, leading to a relentless work cycle. In the Czech Republic, however, coworkers adhered to a strict work-life balance, signing off promptly at the end of the day. This shift required adaptation, as the new norm involved enjoying evenings without work distractions and prioritizing personal time over workplace commitments.
In America, work never stopped at 5 p.m.; I felt a constant responsibility to check emails and keep up with work outside of office hours.
After moving to the Czech Republic, I was surprised by my coworkers, who signed off at the end of the day and enjoyed their personal lives without the pressure of work.
