A coalition of tech partners and law enforcement, led by Microsoft's Digital Crimes Unit, disrupted the Lumma Stealer malware operation, crucial to cyber criminal groups including ransomware gangs. Using a US court order, they seized around 2,300 malicious domains central to Lumma's operations. The malware facilitated the theft of sensitive data and financial resources. Global collaborators, including Europol and Japan's Cybercrime Control Centre, also targeted infrastructure, demonstrating the efficacy of public-private partnerships in combating cybercrime and undermining criminal activities.
Lumma steals passwords, credit cards, bank accounts and cryptocurrency wallets, and has enabled criminals to hold schools to ransom, empty bank accounts and disrupt critical services.
This operation is a clear example of how public-private partnerships are transforming the fight against cyber crime.
