Simon Harris says social media ban for under-16s under 'serious consideration'
Briefly

Tánaiste Simon Harris announced a pressing need for regulatory action on social media usage among children, in light of Australia’s recent ban on platforms for those under 16. Expressing concern over a 'ticking time bomb' regarding smartphone use among youth, he emphasized the inadequacies of self-regulation and recognized Australia for its pioneering legislation. Ireland is urged to review these measures and implement stricter age-verification technologies to safeguard minors amidst widespread social media use, with current data indicating high numbers of children accessing platforms despite age restrictions.

Australia deserves great credit for being the first country to pass laws banning social media for children under 16.
