Automattic's initiative to shift Tumblr's backend to WordPress, announced last year, is currently paused. CEO Matt Mullenweg stated the focus has shifted towards noticeable improvements requested by users. Although he still sees value in the eventual migration for a more integrated platform, immediate efforts are not directed at this change. This delay means Tumblr posts won't be integrated into the fediverse soon, despite the potential benefits of using WordPress's ActivityPub plug-in. Mullenweg mentioned that should the demand increase, they could implement fediverse functionalities on Tumblr's existing architecture.
Automattic's plan to migrate Tumblr's backend to WordPress has been put on hold, focusing instead on user-requested improvements for a better experience.
Mullenweg stated that he wants to complete the migration in the future, as it would create a more streamlined interface, but for now, efforts are focused elsewhere.
The halt on the migration also means Tumblr posts won't be accessible in the fediverse shortly, despite WordPress.com offering an ActivityPub plug-in.
With a significant push for integration into the fediverse, Mullenweg indicated they could pursue implementation on Tumblr's existing code rather than migrate.
