"Did you hear Walmart's announcement yesterday that it's partnering with OpenAI to let you buy stuff directly through ChatGPT? Not "get recommendations and then click over to Walmart.com." Instead, customers will be able to complete purchases start to finish, without leaving the chatbot. RIP, search bar Doug McMillon, Walmart's CEO, put it pretty directly: "For many years now, eCommerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses. That is about to change.""
"So, think about how you shop online now. You type "paper towels" into a search box. You get tons of results. You filter by price, scroll through reviews, compare brands, add to cart, checkout. Walmart is betting - along with OpenAI - is that people would rather just... talk. "I need paper towels, the cheap kind that actually work, delivered by Thursday." Done."
"Over the next few months, ChatGPT users in the U.S. will be able to buy almost everything from Walmart's website directly in the chat interface. (Notable exception, apparently: fresh food). They'll still get Walmart+ perks like free shipping. ChatGPT already lets you buy from Etsy sellers and will soon add Shopify merchants. But Walmart is different just because of its pure scale and size. Also, as of now, OpenAI's Instant Checkout feature only handles single-item purchases. But that's obviously going to expand."
Walmart is partnering with OpenAI to enable end-to-end purchases within ChatGPT so customers can complete orders without leaving the chat interface. The rollout will allow U.S. ChatGPT users to buy almost everything from Walmart.com except fresh food while preserving Walmart+ benefits like free shipping. OpenAI's Instant Checkout currently supports single-item purchases and is expected to expand. Walmart already uses AI to shorten fashion production timelines by up to 18 weeks and improve customer service resolution times by up to 40%. The company has deployed ChatGPT Enterprise internally and is training employees on OpenAI certifications.
