WH Davis, the last remaining independent railway wagon manufacturer in the UK, has secured a €44 million contract to supply 150 wagons to Ireland's Iarnród Éireann. The deal, facilitated by UK Export Finance, marks a significant return to exporting for the company after years and will enable an expansion of the workforce by 25%. The new wagons will enhance carrying capacity and speed, supporting Irish governmental rail freight initiatives. This contract represents the first under a ten-year framework which may involve up to 400 wagons delivered.
The Derbyshire-based company, part of Buckland Rail, will supply 150 freight wagons to Iarnród Éireann, Ireland's state-owned rail operator, in a deal supported by UK Export Finance.
The contract is the first under a ten-year framework agreement that could eventually see as many as 400 wagons delivered.
Andy Houghton, managing director of WH Davis, described the deal as a 'landmark export contract' and said UKEF's backing had provided the confidence and liquidity to grow.
The new wagons will offer a third more carrying capacity than Ireland's existing fleet and operate at speeds of up to 110km/h, compared with 80km/h at present.
