A fire severely damaged the East Bay Media Center in Berkeley early Monday morning, prompting the evacuation of neighboring apartment residents. The fire, fueled by dense storage, led to a roof collapse, but no injuries were reported. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames and had to evacuate buildings on all sides. Founded in 1980, the Media Center has served as a community arts hub, providing training in video production and hosting the Berkeley Video & Film Festival since 1991. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
Firefighters told KTVU that the fire was fueled by "dense storage" inside the building, and that the roof collapsed during the firefight.
When we arrived, we had heavy smoke and fire showing from the front of the building and through the roof," said Berkeley Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Harryman.
The East Bay Media Center was founded in 1980 as a community-focused arts education facility, offering affordable training programs and access to technology.
No one was in the Media Center at the time of the fire, and no firefighters were injured battling the blaze.
