Last-minute guide to Oakland's April 15 election
Briefly

Oakland is holding a special election tomorrow, April 15, to elect a new mayor and a City Council member for District 2, along with a sales tax measure, Measure A. With high political spending and campaign activity, voter participation is crucial as many still haven't cast their votes. Registered voters received mail-in ballots that need to be postmarked or dropped off at official locations by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Both mayoral and council positions are temporary, leading to a subsequent election in 2026, utilizing ranked-choice voting.
This special election has come with a fair amount of political jabbing, huge amounts of spending by independent groups, and last-ditch efforts to influence the decisions of Oakland voters.
If you're among the many who still need to weigh in, The Oaklandside is here to answer your questions.
If you show up to a voting center before 8 p.m. and are in line when the polls close, the poll workers still have to allow you to vote - it's one of your voter rights!
The mayor and city council positions are short-term and will be subject to another election in November 2026, decided using ranked-choice voting.
