Oakland is turning to AI drones to help solve its illegal dumping problem
"A crew will go out with a truck that is equipped to pick up, let's say, tires, and they actually find out that it's a bunch of refrigerators that have been dumped there. And so then they've wasted a trip because they brought the wrong equipment."
"The drones will cover 1,440 linear road miles during the pilot program throughout 72 scheduled flights, according to the City Council's presentation."
Oakland has initiated a six-month pilot program utilizing AI-powered drones to locate illegal dumping across the city. The $150,000 program, approved by the City Council, will involve drones from Aerbits flying over 1,440 linear road miles to identify trash piles. The drones will assist in accurately mapping waste locations, ensuring that cleanup crews are properly equipped. Fixed cameras will also be installed at dumping hotspots to issue fines based on license plate numbers, enhancing enforcement efforts against illegal dumping.
