Oakland starts renovations on Tyrone Carney Park
Groundbreaking began on renovations at Tyrone Carney Park, a half-acre lot in the Sobrante Park neighborhood of East Oakland. The project has $3.5 million in city and state funding to add play areas, fitness equipment, paved walking paths, a new lawn, and other landscaping. A memorial feature for Tyrone Carney will be installed; Carney served as a U.S. Marine Corps private in Vietnam and was killed at age 20. The park, built in 1968, was fenced off in 2002 after a deadly shooting. Community members and a 2017 coalition partnered with city departments to develop concepts and secure grant support, leading to the restoration.
"Over the weekend, Oakland city leaders broke ground on renovations at Tyrone Carney Park, a half-acre lot located in the Sobrante Park neighborhood. With $3.5 million in city and state funding, city officials plan to restore the park by building new play areas, fitness equipment, paved walking paths, a new lawn, and other landscaping features. The park is expected to reopen next summer"
"The city also plans to install a memorial feature for the park's namesake, Tyrone Carney, an East Oakland man who served as a private in Vietnam with the U.S. Marine Corps and was killed at age 20 during the war. On a memorial website, family members and residents remembered him as a local paper boy, church regular, and Castlemont High graduate."
"East Oakland residents spent years working to bring the park back to life. In 2017, members of a community coalition called the East Oakland Neighborhoods Initiative came together to develop a roadmap for improving infrastructure in East Oakland - including revitalizing neighborhood parks. According to the project website, local community members from the Initiative partnered with Oakland's Public Works Department to develop a concept for the park and craft a grant proposal."
