In Oakland, a 40-foot loquat tree attracts attention due to its abundant small orange fruits. During early June, Daniel Goldberg, founder of Feral Ecology, uses a long branch cutter to trim branches while an onlooker catches the cut fruit below. Feral Ecology aims to utilize the unwanted fruit from urban trees, like plums and pears, to reduce waste. Goldberg, who began foraging after moving to the Bay Area for university, started a mushroom foraging guide service in 2023 to promote community education around foraging, addressing the disconnection many have from their food sources.
The feral fruit of the East Bay, often overlooked, goes to waste due to its abundance or lack of foraging knowledge, inspiring Goldberg’s project to collect and ferment it into wine.
Daniel Goldberg aims to involve the community in foraging education, which he believes is desperately needed in a world where people feel disconnected from their food sources.
