This week in Oakland: Mills College Art Museum Centennial Celebration, and Oaklandish's 25th anniversary
"October in The Town means an array of events to check out, including some of the most anticipated of the year. Check out The Oaklandside's fall events roundup for the highlights, including the 70th annual Armenian Food Festival, the 18th annual Oaktoberfest in Dimond, and the 51st annual Black Cowboy Parade. But that's not all, this weekend there's also the Oakland Ballers Parade on Sunday, a Día de Muertos event, the centennial celebration of the Mills College Art Museum at Northeastern University, and much more."
"Oaklandish began back in 2000, as a public art project by Jeff Hull and his then-wife, Angela Tsay. It then evolved into a clothing brand that began selling its first designs out of a small, converted van used as a pop-up at farmers' markets and other events around town. Tsay is now the sole head of the company, and she has collaborated with various artists and other organizations to launch special branded merchandise."
"Earlier this year, 11 veteran Bay Area journalists, who have written for or been part of various publications, including Berkeleyside and The Oaklandside, founded Coyote Media Collective, a worker-owned newsroom. The founding members include Amir Aziz, Supriya Yelimeli, Nuala Bishari, Alan Chazaro, Reo Eveleth, Estefany Gonzalez, Rahawa Haile, Soleil Ho, Daniel Lavery, Cecilia Lei, and Emma Silvers. The team raised $150,000 to officially launch on Sept. 15."
