"Like me, most people were here for one reason: a $3.50 fish sandwich. An Instagram video the Alameda Pulse posted earlier that week featuring the bakery's fish filet bun had, as of writing, about 590,000 views. The original video to spread the word about the sandwich, posted on Jan. 3, has over 180,000 views on Instagram. John Vitale and his wife, who had just made it to the doorway of the bakery but had yet to reach the front, told me they'd been waiting in line for 30 or 45 minutes."
"He said he had come specifically to try the fish sandwich after seeing it on social media, but was excited to try their other offerings - the bakery, which dates back to 1980, also offers baked goods and classic dim sum items like har gow and barbecue pork buns. Michael Matly, who lives in Oakland, also joined the fish filet fray after seeing it on Instagram."
A San Leandro Chinese Bakery & Deli drew long lines at noon as customers sought a $3.50 fish sandwich that went viral on Instagram. One Alameda Pulse video reached roughly 590,000 views and an earlier clip posted Jan. 3 surpassed 180,000 views. Customers reported waiting 30 to 45 minutes to reach the counter. The bakery, established in 1980, also sells baked goods and dim sum like har gow and barbecue pork buns. Some customers planned to purchase many sandwiches after seeing people buy boxes of nine to 12. A customer feared being unable to pay because they had only $3 and suspected cash-only.
