"Teachers engage students in hands-on experiences, teaching them to grow, harvest, and cook various plants. This also integrates social and emotional learning with core subjects."
"FRESHFARM Foodprints, started in 2009, integrates food education with academic lessons, benefiting around 7,000 children by collaborating with 19 schools in D.C."
Kindergarten students at Whittier Elementary School learn about food through hands-on gardening activities. Under the guidance of Rebecca Helgerson, students planted arugula and interacted with the growing plants. The lesson is a part of the FRESHFARM Foodprints program, which integrates food education with various subjects and supports social and emotional learning. This program, initiated in 2005 and launched in 2009, works with approximately 7,000 students in 19 Washington D.C. schools, combining gardening, cooking, and academic support.
