The Barber Pathway Program graduated 13 men incarcerated in a San Bruno jail after an eight-week course taught by three instructors from Academy Barber College. The graduation ceremony took place in an annex room cleared of metal beds and tables. The program restored a form of extracurricular programming that had stalled during the pandemic due to understaffing and lockdowns. The initiative required years of collaboration among the sheriff's department, the Office of Economic and Workforce Development, and community organizations. The program originated from feedback collected at the Bay Area Student Barber Expo and community events including a barber battle.
