Student journalists contribute to more than 282 public radio and television stations nationwide, working behind the scenes, on-screen, and reporting in local communities. Of 319 NPR or PBS affiliates, about 13 percent operate like teaching hospitals with a core mission to train college students, and nearly 60 percent provide intensive, regular opportunities for internships or engagement. Congressional rescission of $1.1 billion in funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting threatens the financial stability of many stations, including those affiliated with colleges, and could reduce experiential learning opportunities, mentorship, and paid internships unless additional investment or new partnerships emerge.
