Darren Cann, a retired Premier League assistant referee, asserts that VAR has not altered referees' on-field decision-making despite public perception. He emphasizes that officials aim to get decisions correct without relying on VAR, using it only as a safety net for clear errors. Cann also praises the introduction of semi-automated offside technology, which significantly reduces the time taken to confirm offside decisions by automatically drawing lines at key moments, thus enhancing game efficiency while still allowing match officials to maintain their calls.
Cann stated, "Not everybody likes VAR and I accept that view... But from a match official's point of view, it is a really valuable tool... Our mindset is to make the right decision."
He emphasized, "I would like to dispel a myth. People think we referee differently because there is VAR but nothing could be further from the truth."
Describing the semi-automated offside technology, Cann noted, "In previous seasons it could take up to 50 seconds just to draw the lines before they came to a decision... With semi-automated offside the lines are automatically drawn at the point where the ball is kicked."
