Flames that consumed the hills': Portugal, Spain reel from wildfires
Briefly

Portugal is experiencing some of the worst wildfires in years, exacerbated by climate change factors like heatwaves and drought. Thousands of firefighters, supported by the military, are currently combating dozens of wildfires across the Iberian Peninsula. The death toll has tragically risen to six, including firefighters who died in accidents. Despite ongoing efforts to control and monitor the fires, concerns remain about potential reignition. Over 2,160 sq km of land has burned in Portugal, while Spain has reported a record of over 3,430 sq km burned this year.
The Iberian Peninsula has been particularly affected by wildfires that have ravaged Southern Europe this summer, fuelled by heatwaves and drought blamed on climate change.
Emergency services are already under enormous strain in what appears to be some of the worst fires in the area in years, according to civil protection authorities.
As of now, five major fires remain active in Portugal, with more than 3,800 firefighters tackling them, while the overall death toll has risen to six.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa confirmed a firefighter's death on Sunday in a traffic accident, which also seriously injured two colleagues.
